Our hearts go out to all of the victims impacted by the devastating flash floods in the Texas Hill Country and Ruidoso, NM.
Recent flash floods in the Texas Hill Country have caused widespread damage, lost lives, washing out roads, sweeping away vehicles, and forcing evacuations in low-lying areas. The rapid rise in water levels overwhelmed creeks and rivers, endangering homes, ranches, and livestock. As of mid‑July 10, more than 121 people have been confirmed dead across Central Texas, with the vast majority of fatalities localized in Kerr County, which alone has reported at least 96 confirmed deaths—including 36 children. An estimated 170-180 people are still missing as search and rescues continue.
Flash flooding struck Ruidoso, New Mexico, on July 8 after heavy monsoon rains caused the Rio Ruidoso to rise to record levels. The flood swept through neighborhoods and an RV park, tragically killing three people, including two young children. Burn scars from recent wildfires worsened the flooding, increasing runoff and damage. Dozens of homes were destroyed or severely damaged, and emergency crews conducted over 60 swift-water rescues. A state of emergency has been declared as the community begins recovery efforts.
Communities across the regions are now facing cleanup efforts and assessing losses, with emergency responders continuing to monitor conditions as more rain is expected.
For those seeking to support flood victims, here are reputable crisis relief resources actively working to help our neighbors in the Hill Country. Thank you to our friends at The Scout Guide – Lubbock and TSCRA for gathering many of these resources.
