Burning the Brand

This lesson teaches students how ranchers use brands to identify their cattle and show ownership. Students learn how brands are read, why they must be unique, and how branding is similar to modern logos.

TEKS: 4.4 History: The student understands the political, economic, and social changes in Texas during the 19th century, including the development of the cattle industry. 4.23 Social Studies Skills: The student communicates in written, oral, and visual forms.
NCSS: Culture: Students examine how symbols and traditions represent groups and communities. Time, Continuity, and Change: Students explore how ranching practices such as cattle branding developed over time.
Ag Literacy: T1.3–5a: Farming and ranching provide food, clothing, and other products we use every day. T2.3–5a: Farmers and ranchers use different tools and practices, such as branding or tagging, to manage livestock.
