Inherited Traits of Horses: Activity 5, Ranch Life Book 2: Cowboys & Horses
Students explore the difference between inherited traits and learned behaviors by observing examples in horses. After reading Chapter 4C (pages 25–29), learners identify which characteristics—such as coat color, size, and temperament—are passed from parents to offspring and which are developed through experience and training. The lesson reinforces key genetics and adaptation concepts, encouraging students to connect these traits to horse care, selection, and breeding decisions. A bonus video featuring NRHC Executive Director Jim Bret Campbell provides additional real-world insight into how ranchers recognize and value inherited traits.
